Other heating, etc. forums:  Infrared Quartz space heaters
From: Garth_West11/16/07 6:02 PM14.1

My wife just purchased a Sunheat Infrared Quartz space heater and I'm wondering if it's worth the $450 price tag. My instincts say no, we could probably do the same with a less expensive plain old quartz heater but if Paul Harvey endorses it (or its cousin the Eden Pure) it must be better. It is a nice looking cabinet and the fan is relatively quiet. It does seem to warm up our basement family room pretty well. So does anyone else have any opinions? We have 30 days to take it back. Thanks.

I would really be interested to find some other opinions on this heater.  My husband just ordered it based on some printed material we recieved in the mail, and is so excited, he is telling everyone they should order one.  He hasn't even gotten his yet, and I have been trying to find something on CR.  Where can I find some informative material here???

Where did you purchase yours and why did you get it. He thinks we will be able to heat the house and cut our heating bills in half, as the leaflet said.  We have 1900 sq ft. We have an oil furnace and a gas fireplace, and he thinks he will be able to heat mostly with this heater.  What do you think???

I am like your husband and as hopeful but also like you, doubtful.  Anything that sounds too good to be true, usually is.  I haven't ordered yet so keep me posted on your findings.

CRs October 2007 reviewed the 1500 EdenPure and it did not fair well (just search "Edenpure").  But, they don't have an "efficiency rating" or list the speed of heating the room.  These are the two biggest claims Eden Pure makes.

Good luck.

Any update or more information?  I am considering the EdenPure models but can't find much feedback on them.

Let me know.

Thank you.

We haven't recieved the EdenPure heater as of 12-4-07. When it comes, I will let you know how it performs.  I still have my doubts.

Hi Everyone, I've never posted here before so if this doesn't come out correctly, I apologize in advance.  It's not clear to me by this thread what, exactly, you all are looking for.....a room space heater or some type of whole house heating system.  I know nothing about the Eden Pure system you're discussing but.....  if anyone is, indeed, looking for a simple 'space heater'....room type standalone heater, I can recommend a wonderful product....the Bionaire Silent Whole Room Heater.  I don't remember now whether it's been reviewed by CR but, I can tell you it's the best I've ever used, the BEST.  It's totally & completely silent. Heats the entire room evenly and quickly. Great features for every  room size/need.  Easy to use, easy to move. Definitely recommend to anyone seeking a standalone type heater.  Got mine at Costco for $50.  Maybe less expensive to buy one for each room needing heat?  Just wanted to throw this out there for anyone interested.

I looked at the Costco w/site and found only a Bionaire tower heater for $50.  Is that the one you have?

When you say "heats quickly" are you saying the room is evenly warm in 10 minutes? 20?

Does it have to run frequently to maintain temperature?

Thanks!

Good Morning, Here's a link to the Costco website showing the one I bought.  Appears it's $59.99 at the site but I bought it at their store and paid $49.99.  If the link doesn't work, do a search on ' Bionaire MicaThermic Convection Console Heater ',  or on ' Item 211169 '.  There's a low and high power setting...if you use the high setting the room will heat up fairly quickly 10-mins but you feel the heat immediately and it's totally silent which is my favorite part.  You asked if it has to run frequently to maintain the temperature....well, that's hard to answer....depends on the ambient temp as in any room or your whole house furnace but the room I use it in is a NE corner bedroom...coldest room in our house and once it's heated we turn the thermostat to low and I think the 2nd or 3rd heat level and just leave it at that.....it maintains a comfortable temp.  It is honestly the best space heater-type product I've ever bought.  I saw this very same heater in a Sharper Image store recently for $150.00.

Brenda,

I also know of someone who got very excited about the EdenPure heater as a result of their printed materials and the Paul Harvey endorsement.  I was skeptical of the claims and became suspicious from the wording and style of their marketing information.  I did a lot of research, and as one of the other individuals has mentioned, Consumer Reports rated it quite low in their October 2007 space heater reviews.  I also found various Internet forums where the vast majority of opinions posted by buyers of the EdenPure heater indicated that it is an overpriced and inferior product.  It appears to me that the EdenPure heater, at best, borders on scam and fraud.  I hope you don't buy one or were able to return it.  Yes, it heats air.  Yes, perhaps they worded things just right to avoid legal problems (maybe if you turn off your furnace and live in your bathroom, you can stay warm and reduce your heating bills by up to 50%).

Somehow, I doubt that there really was a "John Jones" who discovered the magical even heating properties of "cured copper" by accidentally observing how a sheet of it near his furnace magically heated his basement by exhaling its wonderful special heating energy.  I also found their letterhead amusing, with all its lofty-sounding titles included for some reason.  I could go on and on about all the items in their marketing materials that both make me laugh as well as make me angry.

The more I researched this product, the more disgusted I became with the EdenPure people, as well as those who push it, including Paul Harvey.

Here are some sources I found useful in evaluating the EdenPure heater:
