Hey,

My 2003 Tarus needs new rear brakes.  The repair shop I took it too suggested it a while back, but I have only just started using the car a little more frequently as of late.

Now that the teenager will soon have his license we have been practicing more and I wanted to get this done.

Could some of you provide me with some tips on what kind and what a decent price range for rear brakes should be?  I have a couple of quotes now, and will post them when I am back at home.  They appear to be all over the board though, but all of them are pricey.

So should I ask for a particular brand or type of brake pads and should pay to have the rotors turned ?  Anything else you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Your Taurus has rear drum brakes so there's no turning to be done. I'm not an expert on drum brake service but if it's anything as simple as shown in this video, http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-change-the-rear-brake-shoes-on-a-ford-taurus-162631/, I wouldn't expect it to cost very much.

Much depends on what type of brakes in the rear you have. Depending on model it may have 4 whl disks. If it's a more pedestrian type Taurus it has drums in back. Also how many miles on this car?

If it were mine and miles on the high side at the least I would have new shoes and hardware installed and perhaps drums turned. However brakes today are made so poorly (rotors and drums made from inferior metal, too thin, etc.) I would have them replaced. I might also think about replacing wheel cylinders too.

As for prices I"d probably charge $175 to $200 in parts and 1.5 to 2 hours labor
